Spirit Day:

Please mark your calendar. February 2nd is the 100th Day of School. To celebrate, students and staff are encouraged to dress as if they are 100 years old. Have fun and be creative!

Playground Update:

My name is Tim Boczanowski. I am the Measure J Bond Program Director here in our District, and I am responsible for the project that includes the new play structure at Lawrence Elementary. The play structure at Lawrence is part of a Districtwide play structure replacement project that, while seemingly hasn't seen any progress, has actually had several behind the scenes activities taking place over the past several months. Although it was originally believed that a second play box at Lawrence could be installed quickly, the State requires modifications to the surrounding areas to make the area more accessible, and those modifications are more extensive than initially thought by site leadership. There are more than 30 play boxes in the District, all of which are included in the project, so these preparatory steps have taken longer than we would have liked.

In the coming weeks, we will be working through the play structure planning for each campus, and as Lawrence Elementary does not have an upper grades play structure, it will be one of the first campuses that we work on. The current plan to get play box structures installed also requires the time it takes to get a building permit through the State Architect's Office.

We are excited to move forward with this process, which will ultimately result in improved play structures at all our elementary campuses. Our goal is to have all projects completed by the end of the calendar year.

Author Visits:

On January 31st, Lawrence Elementary will have visiting authors, Karen Sanders-Betts and Hannah Howerton (a mother daughter team), on campus for a read-a-loud of their new book, The Little Lemon That Leapt. Flyers are going home in backpacks the week of January 16th and must be returned to their teacher by Friday, January 26th. Students will visit the library for story time and then receive their own signed copy of the book or souvenir (if ordered).  Thank you to PTO for sponsoring this event!

Attendance:

Each month we monitor our school’s attendance. One of our goals in the Single Plan for Student Achievement is to maintain 97%. Last month we reached 95.03%. This placed us 6 out of 12 compared to all other LVJUSD Elementary schools.

Flu Season Reminders from District Nurse:

Flu season is here. The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. YOU CAN STILL GET A FLU VACCINE NOW – IT IS NOT TOO LATE!

Other preventive measures to follow are:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
  • Stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, or your elbow, when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
  • Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Practice other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

A child may be sent home if he/she is vomiting, has a fever, or is believed to be suffering from a recognized contagious or infectious disease.  The child shall not be permitted to return until school authorities are satisfied that the student is no longer contagious or infectious. (Ed. Code 48211)

Students must be fever free/diarrhea free/vomit free 24 hours before returning to school.
