"Our After-school Art Club was a triumph! Thanks to all who helped out--especially to the master-mind, Kristin Wilhoit! The Art Club will be back in the new school year, but all students can look forward to this...

Coming this fall to Lawrence: F.A.M.E. (Fine Arts Mini Experience) for every class! FAME will be a large part of the "A-rts" in our school's "S.T.E.A.M." program, but we need the help of PARENTs, GUARDIANs, & GRANDPARENTs, or other extended family or friends.  Please consider this volunteer opportunity in the new school year. Share the information with those you are in contact with over the summer. We hope to have at least 1-2 adults as "docents" for each classroom. These "docents" would be required to attend a one-time 4-hour training at LES and be committed for the school year.  Volunteer time would amount to approx. 1 hr./1 day/month--not a lot!  All curriculum shared in the program is scripted--meaning: you do not have to have any teaching experience--just enthusiasm for helping our kids!   For more info., please see the FAME website: http://www.fameforkids.com/fame_about.html.  Some other elementary schools in our district have already adopted this program with great success--but only with the support of their school community.  If you or someone you know is interested in helping, please contact me at dannaprobst@hotmail.com or sign up on the WeJoinIn here: https://www.wejoinin.com/sheets/iewuo. Garden Planning Meeting:

As you know, the Lawrence community is eager to provide students with the opportunity to enhance learning in a school garden. In order for this to become a reality, parent and community support is critical. Due to the proposed location of the garden, our planning has been delayed this year. We are excited to finally meet on Thursday, April 12th at 5:00p.m. in the Science Lab. During this meeting, we will discuss first steps for a school garden. This includes adults sharing their level of expertise in the areas of construction, irrigation, botany, etc. It is going to take a team of diverse talent to construct a fully operating garden. The outcome will be amazing, and we are looking forward to your support in making this happen.

Bunny Visit:

Ms. Starkovich has a very tame bunny she would like to bring to school on Thursday, March 29. Students may have the opportunity to hold and pet the bunny during classroom visits. As stated in the LVJUSD Board Policy, BP 6163.2, written notification must be provided to all parents/guardians of students when an animal is brought to school. It is the responsibility of the parent to provide notification of a health condition that may be aggravated by the animals’ presence. If you would like your child to “opt out” of interaction with the bunny, please notify:kstarkovich@lvjusd.k12.ca.us    Notification needs to be received by Wednesday, March 28.

Lost and Found:

All misplaced clothing items are located outside of the multipurpose room. After school on Wednesday and Thursday of next week, our lost and found bins will be moved to the front of the school, so families will have the opportunity to look for their belongings. All unclaimed lost and found items will be donated to a charity over Spring Break.

Birthday Recognition:

You may celebrate your child’s birthday by having his/her name on the marquee for one day. Wishes must be submitted to the office at least 2 weeks prior to the birthday. For additional details, please contact Mamie Kristovich.

Livermore Innovation Fair:

Livermore Innovation Fair will take place on Saturday, April 14 from 10:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. at the Bankhead Theater. This family-friendly free event has been designed as equal parts science fair, high-tech exhibition, art show, and community celebration. Spirit Day:

Please mark your calendar. February 2nd is the 100th Day of School. To celebrate, students and staff are encouraged to dress as if they are 100 years old. Have fun and be creative!

Playground Update:

My name is Tim Boczanowski. I am the Measure J Bond Program Director here in our District, and I am responsible for the project that includes the new play structure at Lawrence Elementary. The play structure at Lawrence is part of a Districtwide play structure replacement project that, while seemingly hasn't seen any progress, has actually had several behind the scenes activities taking place over the past several months. Although it was originally believed that a second play box at Lawrence could be installed quickly, the State requires modifications to the surrounding areas to make the area more accessible, and those modifications are more extensive than initially thought by site leadership. There are more than 30 play boxes in the District, all of which are included in the project, so these preparatory steps have taken longer than we would have liked.

In the coming weeks, we will be working through the play structure planning for each campus, and as Lawrence Elementary does not have an upper grades play structure, it will be one of the first campuses that we work on. The current plan to get play box structures installed also requires the time it takes to get a building permit through the State Architect's Office.

We are excited to move forward with this process, which will ultimately result in improved play structures at all our elementary campuses. Our goal is to have all projects completed by the end of the calendar year.

Author Visits:

On January 31st, Lawrence Elementary will have visiting authors, Karen Sanders-Betts and Hannah Howerton (a mother daughter team), on campus for a read-a-loud of their new book, The Little Lemon That Leapt. Flyers are going home in backpacks the week of January 16th and must be returned to their teacher by Friday, January 26th. Students will visit the library for story time and then receive their own signed copy of the book or souvenir (if ordered).  Thank you to PTO for sponsoring this event!

Attendance:

Each month we monitor our school’s attendance. One of our goals in the Single Plan for Student Achievement is to maintain 97%. Last month we reached 95.03%. This placed us 6 out of 12 compared to all other LVJUSD Elementary schools.

Flu Season Reminders from District Nurse:

Flu season is here. The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. YOU CAN STILL GET A FLU VACCINE NOW – IT IS NOT TOO LATE!

Other preventive measures to follow are:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
  • Stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, or your elbow, when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
  • Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Practice other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

A child may be sent home if he/she is vomiting, has a fever, or is believed to be suffering from a recognized contagious or infectious disease.  The child shall not be permitted to return until school authorities are satisfied that the student is no longer contagious or infectious. (Ed. Code 48211)

Students must be fever free/diarrhea free/vomit free 24 hours before returning to school.

Safety Concerns: As you know, safety is top priority at Lawrence Elementary. We are continuing to experience hazardous situations in our school parking lots. PLEASE follow the arrows in the back lot, pull all the way forward in the valet line, and use the sidewalk instead of walking through the parking lot. We are fortunate that we have not experienced a major catastrophe. If our established safety polices are not followed, we are bound to face an unfortunate event.

Welcome to Lawrence:  We would like to welcome Mrs. Schultz’s class to Lawrence Elementary effective Monday, December 4th. The classroom is designed to support TK-1 grade students by using Applied Behavior Analysis and Social Thinking strategies. Welcome students, staff, and parents!

Attendance: Each month we monitor our school’s attendance. One of our goals in the Single Plan for Student Achievement is to maintain 97%. Last month we exceeded 97% by reaching 98.05%. We were the top elementary school for the second month in a row. Thank you for remembering Every Day Counts!
